- Prerecorded Video-only: Either an alternative for time-based media or an audio track is provided that presents equivalent information for prerecorded video-only content.
Intention of 1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded
The prerecorded audio-only and video-only content available on web pages causes difficulty for users with certain disabilities. For example the audio-only content cannot be perceived by deaf and hard of hearing users. Similarly the video-only content cannot be perceived or understood by blind and visually challenged users. The text transcripts and audio alternates help in providing additional ways of identifying audio-only and video-only content.
The text transcript for prerecorded audio-only and video-only content can be converted into various modes that are comfortable for people with disabilities. A text transcript of prerecorded audio-only content can be translated into any sensory modalities such as auditory or tactile) to match the needs of the user. The text transcript of the prerecorded audio can be read aloud by screen reading technologies for blind users, the text can be resized for low vision users, can be read by deaf users.
The text transcript for prerecorded video-only content also helps the blind and visually challenged users in understanding the content. The purpose of the transcript is to provide the exact information that is visually available. An audio track can also be provided that helps the visually challenged users to understand the content of the video. Similar to text transcript, the audio track also should provide the exact information as the video content. This technique not only helps blind users those cannot perceive video-only content but also for those with cognitive, learning and language difficulties.
Note: A text transcript is not required for the video-only content that is provided with alternate audio track to substitute the video content.
