Since December 11, 2008 W3C WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) are widely used web accessibility standards. Covering almost all aspects of the web content these guidelines are adopted in many countries.
Recently on October 15, 2012 W3C WCAG 2.0 is announced as as an ISO/IEC International Standard (ISO/IEC 40500:2012). The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and JTC 1 (Joint Technical Committee), Information Technology of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), announced approval of the same.
ISO/IEC standard now adds one more strong point for government organizations and business to make their websites accessible. WCAG 2.0 which is widely deployed by many organizations internationally now benefits out of ISO/IEC 40500:2012 standard as well
The JTC expects more wider use of the accessibility standards after the recognition of WCAG 2.0 as ISO/IEC standard.
Let us now hope more and more websites become accessible after formal recognition of WCAG by ISO/IEC.
